Tech NotesWe the techies, the Nerd Boys and Nerd Grrlz, the people you call when you can't print (relax: nobody can print), have something to tell you: there is no such thing as "technical ability" -- or at least not to the extent that you think there is. Knowledge, especially technical knowledge is born of experience, pain, mostly perseverance. We the techies don't find it any easier than you do to figure things out, we only start the journey without any doubt about whether we will arrive at the destination. This is my observation after 30 years in the world of computers, etc. It also isn't about training, mostly. I am a rare example in my field (network engineering) of someone who studied something like my field in college, to the extent that my field had been invented back then... Beside me in the trenches are diesnfranchised (or unfunded) scientists, musicians, poets, film majors, English majors, French majors. The more I look, the more I see that our college degrees are a good thing, but the focus of those degrees has had little to do with anything, really. (I am B.S. ET Purdue, 1984).
